Richard presented at the Ropeless Consortium meeting at the New Bedford Whaling Museum, presenting the current status of SMELTS development of its line free bottom set fishing gear.

October 2018

Richard completed the first NMFS 24 hour HAZWOPER(Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response) training presented by the UC Davis wildlife health center at NOAA west coast headquarters. This new training is aimed at marine mammal responders to assure their safety when responding to emergencies.

May 2018

Richard completed Hazing training with Island Oil Spill Association (IOSA) using Oikomi pipes.  This new training is for marine mammal responders to deter killer whales and other marine mammals out of oil spill areas.

April 2018

Richard was invited to The International Whaling Commission correspondence group for IWC Bycatch Mitigation Initiative.  Richard will be involved in the initiative with the following duties: commenting on near final drafts, providing guidance on specific topics, be invited to workshops, meetings, and draw out linkages and synergies as appropriate between IWC Bycatch Mitigation Initiative and the science and stewardship activities of other fora and IGOs in which Richard participates.

March 2018

Richard presented at the Sixth International Marine Debris Conference in San Diego, California. His presentation included examining the functional utility of Line-Less fishing.

February 2018

Richard was invited to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to present SMELTS Line-Less fishing technology and join a consortium to develop with fishermen, regulatory agencies, scientists, engineers, marine biologists, and funding experts. Learn more at

Richard and Daniel presented at the Society Marine Mammalogy in Halifax, Nova Scotia on Crab Raft.
